LF Networking Signs MOU With OpenAirInterface, Expands Into A Next-Generation Collaboration Hub With Advancements Across AI + Networking, And Cloud Native Automation
At the recent Open Networking and Edge (ONE) Summit in San Jose, California, LF Networking (LFN) made waves by announcing its transition into a next-generation Collaboration Hub. The cornerstone of this transformation is a formal collaboration with the OpenAirInterface (OAI) Software Alliance, aimed at integrating Network Automation for Cloud Native Applications in the RAN and Core Network. Arpit Joshipura, General Manager of Networking, Edge, and IoT at the Linux Foundation, reflected on the industry's remarkable evolution over the past decade, from the advent of Networking Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) to the current frontier of AI and Cloud Native technologies. Joshipura expressed pride in LFN's role as a pioneering force in fostering open collaboration and innovation across the networking ecosystem.
The collaboration with OAI was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signifying a strategic alignment to drive the evolution of Open RAN reference designs and fully open reference platforms. Raymond Knopp, President of the OAI Software Alliance, highlighted the organizations' shared history of collaboration in advancing cloud networking solutions, emphasizing the significance of this partnership in shaping the future of 5G Core and RAN, and laying the groundwork for 6G research.
LFN's AI Task Force, established in 2023, is another testament to the organization's commitment to driving innovation. This task force, dedicated to implementing AI into open networking, has published a white paper titled "Intelligent Networking, AI and Machine Learning for Telecommunications Operators." The paper provides valuable insights and recommendations for incorporating AI/ML technologies into telecommunications operations, reflecting the industry's growing interest and adoption of these transformative technologies.
To support the integration of AI and Cloud Native technologies, LFN has launched a new, free course titled "Introduction to Nephio" in collaboration with Linux Foundation Training and Certification. This course aims to equip product managers, business leaders, and Kubernetes-savvy individuals with the knowledge and skills to leverage Nephio for managing complex network and edge infrastructure. Covering topics such as Edge to Cloud Orchestration and Kubernetes as a Uniform Automation Control Plane, the course empowers participants to actively engage in the Nephio community and contribute to its growth.
Participants who successfully complete the course receive a certificate of completion and a digital badge, solidifying their expertise in Nephio and their commitment to advancing open networking initiatives. This initiative underscores LFN's dedication to fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration within the open networking ecosystem, driving innovation and propelling the industry forward.
